APPA New Generation Report
Hello APPA community.  I'm hoping to use this space to relate news items and statistical information that are of general interest to you all.  

To kick things off I am presenting to you APPA's annual report on new generating capacity.  This report tracks the amount of new capacity that is being developed in the United States.  There are four categories of new plant types: under construction, permitted, pending application, and proposed.  This report details the amount of new capacity at each stage of development by fuel type, region, and entity type (IOU, public power, cooperative, federal, and non-utility).  

APPA has been publishing this report annually since 2007, and the data show a continued trend towards natural gas, wind, and other renewable forms of generation.  For the first time since APPA began publishing this report there is more wind capacity currently under construction than coal.  As for fuel types such as solar and nuclear, they are more prominent in earlier stages of development.   All told, over 441,000 Megwatts (MWs) of new capacity is under some degree of development.  

This report also contains a special section analyzing plants covered in the 2007 and 2008 report.  Did these plants ever come on-line?  The majority of plants that had already been under construction or permitted are now operating, whereas the lion's share of plants that were at one of the two early stages of development - application pending and proposed - never began operating.  Only 11.1 percent of plants at the application pending and proposed stages in the 2007 and 2008 reports are now operating, while nearly one-third of this capacity has been canceled.  Coal plants in particular have faced difficulty getting built as only 3.2 percent of the proposed and application pending coal plants are now operating, whereas 58.7 percent of this capacity was canceled.  

The information on new capacity is from the new entrants section of the Velocity Suite database, accessed in January 2012.
